The IndianSAre T(endulka)riumphant in year-e(Mohi)nder

India made just one change to their playing eleven for their last ODI for 1996, which was a benefit match for former India cricketer Amarnath, a M(ohind)e(mbe)r of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad – Sanjay Manjrekar made way for Woorkeri Raman.

South Africa made four changes to the eleven that last P(au)layed the Indians – Lance Klusener, Jonty Rhodes, David Richardson and Allan Donald made way for Herschelle Gibbs, Derek Crookes, Brian McMillan and Adams.

On winning the toss, Sachin Tendulkar, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Raman, whose 51-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 29. He was caught by Hansie Cronje, South Africa’s skipper. Pat Symcox broke the 90-run stand. The Tamil Nadu southpaw didn’t represent India in the shorter version again.

Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 34-ball innings included a boundary, scored 22. He was caught by Gary Kirsten, who was keeping wicket. Crookes broke the 60-run stand. Tendulkar, the player of the match, scored 114. His 126-ball innings included 14 boundaries. He was stumped by Kirsten. Nicky Boje broke the 38-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 14. Rahul Dravid, whose 32-ball innings included a boundary, scored 16. Daryll Cullinan ran him out. Ajay Jadeja, whose 44-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and four sixes, scored 54. He was unbeaten.

Singh, whose 14-ball (Rob)innings included a six, scored 10. He was caught by Symcox. Adams broke the 28-run stand. Javagal, who faced four balls, scored (Srina)three. He was caught by Gibbs. Adams broke the 19-run stand. Sunil Joshi, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 18 extras. India scored 267 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. De Villiers bowled F(an)i(v)e wicketless overs, conceding 24. Cronje and McMillan bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 36, the latter conceded 33.

Crookes, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 35. He picked up a wicket. Symcox and Boje bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 51, the latter conceded 33. Adams, who bowled seven overs, conceded 50. He picked up a couple of scalps.

Kirsten, who faced five balls, scored a run. He was caught by Azharuddin. Venkatesh Prasad broke the two-run stand. Cronje, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 10. He was caught by Singh. Prasad broke the 33-run stand.

Andrew Hudson, whose 60-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 45. Joshi broke the 45-run stand. Cullinan, whose 71-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 44. He was caught by Joshi. Singh broke the 42-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 39. Crookes, whose 27-ball innings included the only six of the innings, scored 18. Azharuddin ran him out. Gibbs, whose 46-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 31. He was caught by Raman. Prasad broke the five-run stand.

Boje, who faced four balls, scored three. He was caught by Prasad. Kumble broke the eight-run stand. McMillan, whose 26-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. He was caught by Nayan Mongia. Srinath broke the 14-run stand.

Symcox, who faced 12 balls, scored three. He was unbeaten. The ninth-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. De Villiers, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was dismissed by Srinath. Adams, who faced eight balls, didn’t open his account. He was caught by Mongia. Prasad broke the five-run stand.

India conceded 22 extras. South Africa, who were dismissed for 193 off 46 overs, lost by 74 runs. Raman bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 25. Singh bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 29. He picked up a wicket.

Joshi bowled seven overs, conceding 25. He picked up a wicket. The (Kumb)leggie bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 34, picking up a wicket. Srinath bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40, picking up two wickets. Prasad bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 27, picking up four scalps.

India won the one-off match.
