India’S(ach)innings ends; The match iSAbandoned

While India played an unchanged eleven, South Africa made a couple of changes to the eleven that last P(au)layed the Indians – Adam Bacher and Adams made way for Andrew Hudson and Pat Symcox. On winning the toss, Sachin Tendulkar, India’s skipper, chose to bat.

Their openers put on 43. Sourav Ganguly, whose 43-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 18. Symcox ran him out. Tendulkar, whose 27-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 32. He was caught by Jonty Rhodes. Lance Klusener broke the 11-run stand.

Rahul Dravid, whose 70-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 33. He was caught by Gary Kirsten. Hansie Cronje, South Africa’s skipper, broke the 62-run stand. Ajay Jadeja, who faced 22 balls, scored 10. Allan Donald broke the 22-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 24. Singh, whose 25-ball (Rob)innings included the only six of the innings, scored 16. Kirsten ran him out. The sixth-wicket pair put on 15. Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 81-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 60. Daryll Cullinan ran him out.

The seventh-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Javagal Srinath, who faced a ball, D(av)id not open his account. He was caught by Richardson off the bowling of Shaun Pollock. Nayan Mongia, who faced 11 balls, wasn’t in seventh heaven. He was caught by Hudson. Needless to say, Klusener was in seventh heaven.

Anil Kumble, who faced 10 balls, scored three. He was caught by Klusener. Donald broke the three-run stand. Sunil Joshi, who faced eight balls, scored three. He was unbeaten, as was Venkatesh Prasad, who faced a couple of balls, scoring as many.

The South Africans conceded seven extras. The Indians scored 191 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Jacques Kallis, who bowled four overs, conceded 27. He was wicketless, as was Symcox, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 49. Cronje bowled half-a-dozen overs, including a maiden. He conceded 23, picking up a wicket.

Pollock bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31, picking up a wicket. Klusener and Donald bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 35, the latter, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 23.

Hudson, whose 25-ball innings included a boundary, wasn’t in seventh heaven. He was caught by Joshi. Srinath broke the 18-run stand. Kirsten, whose 41-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 20. He was unbeaten, as Kallis, who scored eight. His 22-ball innings included a boundary.

The Indians conceded seven extras. The South Africans scored 42 for the loss of one wicket off 14.3 overs. Singh, who bowled three wicketless balls, conceded a couple. Prasad bowled seven wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 26. Srinath bowled seven overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded a dozen, picking up the only wicket that fell.

The match was abandoned due to rain.
