India S(achi)nap SA’s winning streak

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Navjot Singh Sidhu made way for Mumbaikar Sanjay Manjrekar. South Africa made a change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Herschelle Gibbs made way for Andrew Hudson.

On winning the toss, Sachin Tendulkar, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Manjrekar, who faced 31 balls, wasn’t in seventh heaven. He was caught by David Richardson. Fanie de Villiers broke the 34-run stand. He never represented India in the shorter format again.

Javagal Srinath, whose seven-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. He was caught by de Villiers. Allan Donald, the player of the series, broke the nine-run stand. Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 40-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 26. He was caught by Richardson. Nicky Boje broke the 48-run stand.

Tendulkar, whose 88-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 67. He was caught by Hansie Cronje, South Africa’s skipper. Boje broke the 46-run stand. Rahul Dravid, whose 41-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 31. De Villiers broke the 10-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Robin Singh, who faced 24 balls, scored five. Jonty Rhodes ran him out. Ajay Jadeja, whose 42-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, scored 43. He was unbeaten.

Nayan Mongia, who faced 22 balls, scored 15. He was caught by Boje. De Villiers broke the 51-run stand. Sunil Joshi, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 13 extras. India scored 220 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Lance Klusener, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 26. Cronje, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 27. Pat Symcox, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 42.

Donald bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 36, picking up a wicket. Boje bowled 10 overs, conceding 51. He picked up a couple of wickets. De Villiers bowled 10 overs, including three maidens. He conceded 32, picking up three scalps.

Hudson, whose 14-ball innings included a maiden, wasn’t in seventh heaven. He was caught by Azharuddin. Venkatesh Prasad broke the 19-run stand. Klusener, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored seven. He was caught by Dravid. Prasad broke the 10-run stand.

Gary Kirsten, whose 42-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 23. He was caught by Dravid. Kumble, the player of the match, broke the 20-run stand. Rhodes, who faced nine balls, scored half-a-dozen. He was caught by Joshi. The (Kumb)leggie broke the 11-run stand.

Cronje, who faced 28 balls, scored half-a-dozen. He was caught by Joshi. Singh broke the 24-run stand. Daryll Cullinan, whose 50-ball innings included a boundary, scored 31. He was caught by Azharuddin. Singh broke the eight-run stand.

Boje wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he scored just three. He was caught by Azharuddin. Joshi broke the four-run stand. Richardson, whose 66-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 43. He was caught by Singh. Prasad broke the eighth-wicket stand, which was worth 88.

Symcox, whose 61-ball innings included four boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 46. He was stumped by Mongia. Kumble broke the one-run stand. De Villiers, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten. The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Donald, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was dismissed by Kumble.

India conceded 13 extras. South Africa, who were dismissed for 185 off 47.2 overs, lost by 35 runs. Srinath, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 45. Joshi, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 46. He picked up a wicket.

Singh bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40, picking up a couple of wickets. Prasad, who bowled nine overs, conceded 28. He picked up three wickets. Kumble bowled 8.2 overs, conceding 25. He picked up four scalps.

India won the 1996/97 Titan Cup.
