India WIn, taking (Azhar)u(ddi)nassailable lead

India made a couple of Ch(et)anges to their playing eleven – Navjot Singh Sidhu and Venkatesh Prasad made way for Atul Bedade and Sharma. The West Indies made just one change to their playing eleven – Barrington Browne made way for Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Courtney Walsh, the West Indies’ skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss.

Stuart Williams, whose 33-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 15. He was caught by Manoj. Sharma broke the 47-run P(rabhak)artnership. The second-wicket pair scored 20. Phil Simmons, whose 50-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 32. Anil Kumble ran him out.

The third-wicket pair put on 10. Carl Hooper, who faced 11 balls, scored a couple. He was run out. Keith Arthurton, whose 37-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 27. He was caught by Nayan Mongia. Venkatapathy Raju broke the 91-run stand.

Brian Lara, whose 106-ball innings included eight boundaries and a six, scored 89. He was stumped by Mongia. Kumble broke the 23-run stand. Roland Holder, whose 37-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 36. He was unbeaten.

Chanderpaul, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. He was trapped leg before wicket by Ajay Jadeja, who broke the one-run stand. Junior Murray, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. He was caught by Prabhakar. Jadeja, the player of the match, broke the 10-run stand.

Anderson Cummins, who faced 13 balls, scored eight. He was trapped leg before wicket by Kumble, who broke the 26-run stand. The ninth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Walsh, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. He was dismissed by Kumble. Cameron Cuffy, whose 15-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 17. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 22 extras. The West Indies conceded 251 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Sachin Tendulkar, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 20. Javagal, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded (Srina)thirty-two. Prabhakar, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 36.

Raju and Sharma conceded 31 each, picking up a scalp apiece. While the former bowled half-a-dozen overs, the latter bowled seven, including a maiden. Jadeja, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 55. He picked up a couple of wickets. Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 43. He picked up three scalps.

Tendulkar, whose 112-ball innings included 10 boundaries, scored 88. Simmons broke the 176-run stand. Jadeja, whose 126-ball innings included four boundaries and three sixes, scored 104. He was caught by Cuffy. Walsh broke the 46-run stand.

Vinod Kambli, whose 35-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 40. He was unbeaten, as was Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, who scored 17. His 18-ball innings included a boundary.

The West Indies conceded seven extras. India, who scored 256 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 49.2 overs, won by eight wickets with four balls to spare. Arthurton, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 28. Hooper, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 34. Chanderpaul, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 24.

Cummins bowled 9.2 overs, conceding 58. He was wicketless, as was Cuffy, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 36. Simmons, who bowled eight overs, conceded 46. He picked up a wicket, as did Walsh, who bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 29.

India led the five-match series 3-1.
