India WIn A(zharuddi)nother home series

While India’s playing eleven was unchanged, the West Indies made a couple of changes to theirs – Junior Murray and Courtney Walsh, the skipper, made way for Jimmy Adams and Barrington Browne. Brian Lara led the visitors in his place. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss.

The Indian openers put on 95. Ajay Jadeja, whose 63-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 31. He was caught by Carl Hooper, the player of the match, off his own bowling. Tendulkar, the player of the series, scored 105. His 134-ball (Sach)innings included 10 boundaries. He was caught by Adams. Browne broke the 117-run stand.

Vinod Kambli, whose 64-ball innings included four boundaries and the only six of the innings, included 66. He was caught by Lara. Anderson Cummins broke the 27-run stand. Atul Bedade, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. He was unbeaten. He never represented India again.

Azharuddin, who faced five balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Phil Simmons. Cummins broke the six-run stand. Chetan Sharma, who was also playing his last One-day International, faced three balls, scoring a run. He was caught by Cameron Cuffy. Browne was in seventh heaven. Manoj Prabhakar, who faced a ball, scored a boundary. He was unbeaten.

The West Indies conceded 35 extras. India scored 259 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs. Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Phil Simmons bowled five wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 43, the latter conceded 25. Cuffy, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 40.

Simmons, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Azharuddin. Javagal Srinath broke the three-run stand. Stuart Williams, who faced 32 balls, scored 13. He was caught by Nayan Mongia. Chetan Sharma broke the 47-run stand.

Lara, whose 59-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 47. He was trapped leg before wicket by Venkatapathy Raju, who broke the 40-run stand. Adams, whose 55-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 50. He was caught by Kambli. Anil Kumble broke the 126-run stand.

Hooper, whose 88-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 84. He was trapped leg before wicket by Raju, who broke the two-run stand. Keith Arthurton, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 14. He was caught by Azharuddin. Kumble broke the 20-run stand.

Chanderpaul, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored eight. His runs came by way of boundaries. He was caught by Bedade. Prabhakar broke the nine-run stand. Cummins, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Raju broke the four-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair put on just a run. Roland Holder, who faced a dozen balls, scored eight. He was run out. Cuffy, who faced three balls, scored a couple. Raju broke the two-run stand. Browne, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 25 extras. The West Indies, who were dismissed for 254 off 49 overs, lost by five runs. Tendulkar, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 31. Srinath, who bowled seven overs, conceded 42. He picked up a wicket. Prabhakar bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 35, picking up a wicket.

Sharma, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 39. He picked up a wicket. Kumble bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 42, picking up two wickets. Raju bowled nine overs, conceding 46. He picked up four scalps.

India won the five-match series 4-1.
