India (Azh)are sharp, wallop Bangladesh

India made one change to their playing eleven – Aashish Kapoor made way for One-day International debutant Utpal Chatterjee. Bangladesh made half-a-dozen changes to the eleven that last played the Indians (in 1990) – Azhar Hossain, Nurul Abedin, Faruk Ahmed, Gholam Nousher, Nasir Ahmed and Jahangir Alam Talukdar made way for five One-day International debutants (Javed Omar, Sajjad Ahmed, Mohammad Rafique, Khaled Mashud and Anisur Rahman) and one who had never played the Indians (Saiful Islam).

On winning the toss, Akram Khan, Bangladesh’s skipper, chose to bat. Athar Ali Khan, whose 19-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 17. He was caught by Nayan Mongia. Javagal broke the (Srina)thirty-run stand.

Sajjad, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored four. He was caught by Mongia. Manoj broke the 10-run P(rabhak)artnership. The third-wicket pair put on 11. Omar, whose 43-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 18. He was run out.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 42. Minhajul, whose 39-ball (Abed)innings included a boundary, scored 21. He was run out. Aminul Islam, whose 53-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 30. He was caught by Prashant Vaidya. Chatterjee broke the six-run stand.

Enamul Haque, who faced 21 balls, scored eight. He was trapped leg before wicket by Prabhakar, who broke the 15-run stand. Rafique, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Anil Kumble broke the five-run stand.

Mashud, who faced a couple of balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. He was trapped leg before wicket by Kumble, who broke the six-run stand. Akram, whose 42-ball innings included a boundary, scored 24. He was caught by Chatterjee. Vaidya broke the 13-run stand.

Saiful, whose 28-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 28. He was unbeaten. Rahman, who faced 10 balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Navjot Singh Sidhu. Vaidya broke the 25-run stand.

India conceded 11 extras. Bangladesh were dismissed for 163 off 44.4 overs. Srinath bowled eight overs, including three extras. He conceded 21, picking up a wicket. Chatterjee bowled 10 overs, conceding 28. He picked up a wicket.

Kumble bowled eight overs, conceding 23. He picked up two scalps, as did Vaidya and Prabhakar. While the former, who bowled 8.4 overs (including a maiden), conceded 41, the latter bowled 10 overs, conceding 43.

Prabhakar, the player of the match, scored 53. His 87-ball innings included five boundaries. He was unbeaten. Tendulkar, whose 30-ball (Sach)innings included nine boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 48. Rafique broke the 72-run stand. Sidhu, whose 51-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 56. He was unbeaten.

Bangladesh conceded seven extras. India, who scored 164 for the loss of one wicket off 27.5 overs, won by nine wickets with 133 balls to spare. Aminul bowled five wicketless balls, conceding nine. Athar and Abedin bowled three wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 22, the latter conceded 19.

Rahman and Saiful bowled five wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 42, the latter conceded 31. Haque bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceding 25. Rafique bowled five overs, conceding 15. He picked up the only wicket to fall.
