India (Azh)are kayoed by SA

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, South Africa made three C(allag)hanges to the eleven that last played the Indians – Kepler Wessels, Brian McMillan and Richard Snell made way for Gary Kirsten, Dave and Eric Simons. Hansie Cronje, the South African skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss.

Andrew Hudson, whose 33-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 24. Fifty-seven balls into the match, Javagal Srinath broke the 47-run stand. Daryll Cullinan, whose 94-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 65. Twenty-eight overs later, he was caught by Venkatesh Prasad. Anil Kumble broke the 120-run stand.

Cronje, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Kumble, who was in seventh heaven. The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Jonty Rhodes, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Kumble.

Callaghan, whose 26-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Thirty-seven balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Kumble, who broke the 27-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Kirsten, the player of the match, scored 80. His 127-ball (Sach)innings included a boundary. Four balls later, Tendulkar ran him out.

David Richardson, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. He was unbeaten, as was Simons, who faced eight balls, scoring seven. India conceded 17 extras. South Africa scored 223 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. Manoj Prabhakar, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 24. Prasad, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 32.

Venkatapathy Raju, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 46. Tendulkar, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 43. The paceman from Karnataka, who bowled eight overs, conceded (Srina)thirty. He picked up a wicket. Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 40. He picked up four scalps.

Tendulkar, whose 51-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 37. A hundred and sixteen balls into the chase, he was caught by Pat Symcox. Cronje broke the 61-run stand. Navjot Singh Sidhu, who faced a dozen balls, scored five. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Callaghan. Cronje broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth a dozen.

Ajay Jadeja, whose 91-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 29. Five balls later, he was caught by Kirsten. Symcox broke the three-run stand. The fourth-wicket pair put on 42. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, scored 20. His 37-ball innings included a boundary. Fifty-eight balls later, he was run out.

Vinod Kambli, whose 49-ball innings included a six, scored 30. Thirty-one balls later, he was caught by Richardson. Allan Donald broke the 30-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair put on 11. Prabhakar wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he scored half-a-dozen. Eleven balls later, Fanie de Villiers ran him out.

Javagal, whose 25-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored (Srina)thirty-seven. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Simons. Donald broke the 37-run stand. Kumble, who faced three balls, scored just a run. Five balls later, de Villiers trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the four-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair put on nine. Nayan Mongia, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, scored 24. Eight balls later, he was run out. Prasad, who faced five balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 15 extras. India, who scored 209 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs, lost by 14 runs. Callaghan bowled three overs, conceding 23. He was wicketless, as was Simons bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 28.

De Villiers and Symcox bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 56, the latter conceded 20. Donald bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 43, picking up a couple of wickets. Cronje, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 34. He picked up a couple of scalps.

Although the Indians had to play their last match, they were already knocked out.
