England lose to Dhoni-led India

India made three changes to theiR Playing (Pat)eleven – Rahul Dravid, Singh and Munaf made way for Gautam Gambhir, Praveen Kumar and Umesh Yadav. England made one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Ian Bell made way for Kevin Pietersen.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper and the player of the match, chose to bat.

The first Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They had scored 47 and lost a wicket – that of Parthiv Patel, who scored nine. His 10-ball (F)innings included a boundary. India’s openers put on 17. Twenty-three balls later, Steven ran him out.

India scored 50 off 11 overs (66 balls). England had conceded nine extras at that point.

Ajinkya Rahane, who faced 41 balls, scored 15. Forty-seven balls after Parthiv’s dismissal, he was stumped by Craig Kieswetter. Graeme Swann broke the 35-run stand.

Fifteen balls into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 66 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Gautam Gambhir was batting on 26, the number of runs Virat Kohli had scored at that point gave him a reason to be in seventh heaven.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the bowling Powerplay – was between the 17th and the 21st over. They had scored 20 and lost a wicket – that of Gambhir, who eventually scored 32. His 33-ball innings included four boundaries. Thirty-seven balls after Rahane’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Jade Dernbach, who broke the 27-run stand.

India scored 100 off 23.1 overs (139 balls). England had conceded 10 extras at that point.

Kohli, who faced 63 balls, scored 37. Sixty-six balls after Gambhir’s dismissal, he was caught by Pietersen. Samit Patel broke the 44-run stand.

Thirty-two overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 135 for the loss of four wickets at that point. While Suresh Raina was batting on 29, Dhoni was batting on three.

India scored 150 off 35 overs (210 balls). England had conceded 10 extras at that point.

The third Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the batting Powerplay – was between the 36th and the 40th over. They had scored 39 and lost a wicket.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 54 balls. While Raina's contribution to the partnership was 29, that of the man from Ranchi to it was (Dho)nineteen. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

Raina's half-century – which included five boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 52 balls.

Raina faced 55 balls, eventually scoring 61. Sixty balls after Kohli’s dismissal, he was caught by Jonny Bairstow. Finn broke the 72-run partnership.

India scored 200 off 39 overs (235 balls). England had conceded 18 extras at that point.

Dhoni’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries – came off 48 balls.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 50 off 35 balls. While Dhoni’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Ravindra Jadeja’s contribution to it was 24. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was eight.

The sixth-wicket pair eventually put on 65. Jadeja, whose 22-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, eventually scored 27. Forty-three balls after Raina’s dismissal, Tim Bresnan ran him out.

The seventh-wicket pair put on 22. Ashwin, whose six-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Fourteen balls later, Finn (Ravichand)ran him out.

India scored 300 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs (301 balls).

England eventually conceded 23 extras. Dhoni, whose 70-ball innings included 10 boundaries and a six, eventually scored 87. He was unbeaten, as was Praveen, who faced a ball, scoring a run.

Ravi Bopara, who bowled three overs, conceded 21. He was wicketless, as was Bresnan, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 66.

Samit, who bowled eight overs, conceded 49. He picked up a wicket. Finn, who bowled nine overs, conceded 67. He picked up a wicket. Dernbach and Swann bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 58, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 35.

The second Powerplay of England’s innings – which was the batting Powerplay – was between the 16th and the 20th over. They had scored 29 without the loss of a wicket.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 53 balls. While Cook’s contribution to the partnership was 33, Trott’s contribution to it was 17. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

Cook’s run-a-ball half-century included seven boundaries.

England scored 100 off 20.1 overs (121 balls). India had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

Cook, whose 63-ball innings included seven boundaries, eventually scored 60. Eighty-one balls after Pietersen's dismissal, he was caught by Vinay Kumar. Jadeja broke the 71-run partnership. Trott, who faced 42 balls, eventually scored 26. A dozen balls later, Jadeja broke the nine-run stand.

Bopara, who faced 10 balls, scored eight. Eight balls later, he was caught by Ashwin, who broke the eight-run stand. Bairstow had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just three. Five balls later, he was caught by Jadeja, who broke the two-run stand.

Bresnan, who faced eight balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Fifteen balls later, he was stumped by Dhoni. Ashwin broke the eight-run stand.

The third Powerplay of England’s innings – which was the batting Powerplay – was between the 32nd and the 36th over. They had scored 26 and lost a couple of wickets.

Swann, whose nine-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Fourteen balls later, Yadav broke the run-a-ball stand.

England scored 150 off 31.5 overs (191 balls). India had conceded three extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Samit, whose 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Thirteen balls later, Yadav broke the 15-run stand. Finn, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 18. He was unbeaten.

Dernbach, who faced five balls, scored a couple. Fourteen balls later, Ashwin broke the 11-run stand.

England, who were dismissed for 174 off 36.1 overs, lost by 126 runs. Kohli bowled three overs, conceding 11. He was wicketless, as was Vinay, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 24.

Praveen bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 38, picking up a wicket. Yadav bowled five overs, conceding 32. He picked up two wickets. Jadeja bowled seven overs, conceding 34. He picked up three scalps, as did Ashwin, who bowled 8.1 overs, conceding 35.
