Dhoni’s back; India, England disappointed

India made five changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Shikhar Dhawan, Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Amit Mishra and Ishant (Shar)made way for One-day International debutant Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Dravid, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (who was leading the team), Praveen Kumar and Munaf.

England made seven changes to the (Micha)eleven that last played the Indians – Andrew Strauss, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Matt Prior, Yardy, Graeme Swann and Ajmal Shahzad made way for Alastair Cook (who was leading the team), Craig Kieswetter, Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, Samit Patel, Stuart Broad and Jade Dernbach.

On winning the toss, Cook inserted the visitors.

The first Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They had scored 43 without the loss of a wicket.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the bowling Powerplay – was between the 11th and the 15th over. They had scored 35 without the loss of a wicket.

India's openers scored 50 off 11.1 overs (67 overs). England had conceded a couple of extras at that point. While Parthiv’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Rahane's contribution to it was 27.

Rahane, whose 44-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 40. Sixteen overs into the match, he was caught by Samit. Broad broke the 82-run stand.

It was at that point that the first drinks break was taken. Parthiv was batting on 39.

A bowling review by England against Dravid – who faced half-a-dozen balls, scoring a couple – was upheld by umpire Billy Doctrove of Dominica. Ten balls after Rahane’s dismissal, he was caught by Kieswetter. Broad broke the five-run stand.

Parthiv’s half-century – which included seven boundaries – came off 66 balls.

India scored 100 off 21.3 overs (129 balls). England had conceded three extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 63 balls. While Parthiv’s contribution to the partnership was 32, Virat Kohli's contribution to it was 18. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

India scored 150 off 30.3 overs (183 balls). England had conceded four extras at that point.

Thirty-five overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 179 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Parthiv was batting on 93, Kohli was batting on 37.

The third-wicket pair put on 100 off 112 balls. While Parthiv’s contribution to the partnership was 53, Kohli’s contribution to it was 43. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was four.

Parthiv, whose 107-ball innings included 12 boundaries, eventually scored 95. A hundred and sixteen balls after Dravid's dismissal, he was caught by Kieswetter. James Anderson broke the 103-run partnership.

Two hundred and twenty-four balls into the match (and a couple of balls after Parthiv’s dismissal), Rohit, who faced a ball but failed to get off the (Shar)mark, retired hurt. India had scored 191 for the loss of three wickets at that point.

India scored 200 off 38.4 overs (232 balls). The number of extras they had conceded at that point gave England no reason to be in seventh heaven.

Kohli's half-century – which included three boundaries – came off 69 balls. He eventually scored 55 off 73 balls, which included four boundaries. Fifteen balls after Parthiv’s dismissal (and 13 balls after Rohit retired), Samit broke the 15-run stand.

The third Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the batting Powerplay – was between the 45th and the 49th over. They had scored 38 and lost a wicket.

India scored 250 off 46.2 overs (278 balls). England had conceded eight extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 47 balls. While Suresh Raina's contribution to the partnership was 27, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 24. Extras' contribution to it was a run.

Raina, whose 29-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, eventually scored 38. Fifty-four balls after Kohli’s dismissal, he was caught by Cook. Dernbach broke the 60-run partnership.

Dhoni, whose 36-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 33. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Kieswetter. Tim Bresnan broke the six-run stand. Praveen, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten.

The seventh-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Ravichandran Ashwin, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Bresnan. Vinay Kumar, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

India scored 274 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Jonathan Trott, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 14.

Dernbach and Anderson bowled nine overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 62, the latter conceded 41. Samit, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 42. He picked up a wicket.

Broad and Brendan bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former conceded 56, the latter conceded 54.

The first Powerplay of England’s innings – which was the first Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over.

Cook, who faced 10 balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Sixteen balls into the chase, Praveen broke the six-run stand. Kieswetter, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty-five balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Praveen, who broke the 15-run stand.

Trott, whose run-a-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 14. He was unbeaten, as was Ian Bell, who faced a ball, scoring a couple.

India conceded just an extra. England scored 27 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 7.2 overs. It was at that point that rain stopped play.

Praveen bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 11, picking up both the wickets that fell. Vinay bowled 3.2 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 15, and was wicketless.

The match ended without a result. The five-match series was level at 0-0.
