India (Vengsark)are WInless in year-ender

It was a 45-overs-a-side match. India made three changes to their playing eleven – Arun Lal, Chandrakant Pandit and Chetan Sharma made way for Mohinder Amarnath, Mohammad Azharuddin and Manoj Prabhakar. The West Indies made just one – Phil Simmons replaced Gordon Greenidge. On winning the toss, Dilip Vengsarkar, India’s skipper, inserted the visitors.

Desmond Haynes scored 17. His 42-ball innings included three boundaries. Maninder Singh broke the 40-run stand. Simmons, whose 48-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored (Srikkan)thirty-four. He was caught by Krishnamachari. Amarnath broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth 22.

Richie Richardson, who faced 45 balls, scored 10. He was caught by Kiran More. Amarnath broke the third-wicket stand, which was worth a dozen.

Vivian Richards, the West Indies’ skipper and the player of the match, scored 41. His 52-ball innings included a boundary and a six. He was stumped by More. Ravi broke the fourth-wicket partnership, which was worth S(hastr)ixty-nine.

Srikkanth, who faced 13 balls, scored just a run. Courtney Walsh broke the nine-run stand. Anshuman, who never represented India again, scored (Gaekw)adozen. His 30-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Benjamin broke the 16-run stand. Vengsarkar, who faced 50 balls, scored 24. He was caught by Harper. Richards broke the third-wicket partnership, which was worth 58.

Jimmy, whose 70-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored (Amarna)thirty-three. He was caught by Richardson. Hooper broke the fourth-wicket stand, which was worth half-a-dozen.

The fifth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Azharuddin, who faced eight balls, scored three. He was caught by Hooper off his own bowling. Dev, whose 29-ball innings included a boundary, scored 22. He was unbeaten.

Patrick Patterson broke the one-run stand. Prabhakar, who faced four balls, scored a run. He was trapped leg before wicket by Walsh, who broke the four-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair put on a dozen. Ayub, who faced a dozen balls, scored half-a-dozen. He was run out. Singh, who faced a ball, did not get off the mark. Walsh broke the one-run stand.

The West Indies conceded 20 extras. The Indians, who were dismissed for 135 off 41.3 overs, lost by 52 runs. Harper bowled nine wicketless overs, conceding 21. Benjamin bowled five overs, including a maiden. He conceded 15, picking up a scalp.

Richards and Patterson bowled eight overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the latter conceded 37, the latter, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 20. Hooper bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 10, picking up a couple of maidens. Walsh bowled 7.3 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 16, picking up four scalps.

The West Indies led the seven-match series 2-0.
