India disappoint; WI are (Shas)triumphant

India made a couple of Ch(et)anges to their playing eleven – Sharma and Maninder Singh made way for Sanjeev Sharma and One-day International debutant Narendra Hirwani. The West Indies made just one – Winston Davis was replaced by Patrick Patterson. On winning the toss, Ravi Shastri, India’s skipper, inserted the West Indians.

Desmond Haynes, who faced 15 balls, scored five. Sanjeev broke the eight-run stand. Phil Simmons, whose 22-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 21. He was trapped leg before wicket by Arshad Ayub, who broke the 47-run stand.

Richie Richardson, whose 39-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 30. He was caught by Ayub. Shastri broke the 10-run stand. Vivian Richards, whose 35-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 33. The West Indies’ captain was caught by Sanjeev. Mohinder broke the (Amarna)thirty-eight-run stand.

Gus Logie scored 54. His 84-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Sanjeev. Ayub broke the fifth-wicket stand, which was worth 108. Carl Hooper, the player of the match, scored 113. His 97-ball innings included a dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes. He was unbeaten.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 57. Eldine Baptiste, who faced nine balls, scored four. He was run out. Winston Benjamin, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten. India conceded 18 extras. The West Indies scored 278 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs.

Kapil Dev and Woorkeri Raman bowled three wicketless overs each. While the former conceded 36, the latter conceded 23. Hirwani bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 34. Sanjeev bowled six overs, conceding 42. He picked up a wicket.

The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Raman, who faced four balls, scored a run. He was caught by Dujon off the bowling of Courtney Walsh. Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 33-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 23. He was caught by Dujon. Benjamin broke the 73-run stand.

Dev scored 52. His 42-ball innings included eight boundaries and a six. Baptiste broke the sixth-wicket stand, which was worth half-a-dozen. Shastri scored 73. His 72-ball innings included 11 boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten. The seventh-wicket pair put on 23. Kiran More, whose 16-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. He was run out.

Ayub scored 12. His 14-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. He was stumped by Dujon. Richards broke the 17-run stand. Sanjeev, who faced 11 balls, scored just a run. He was caught by Haynes. Richards broke the 18-run stand. Hirwani faced 16 balls, scoring a couple. Patterson broke the last-wicket partnership, which was worth 53.

The West Indies conceded 19 extras. India were dismissed for 205 off 41 overs. Simmons, who bowled an over, conceded nine. He was wicketless, as was Hooper, who bowled two overs, conceding 27.
