India are (Carib)bea(te)n; WI (Ra)victors

It was a 45-overs-a-side match. India made three changes to their playing eleven – Arun Lal, Woorkeri Raman and Arshad Ayub made way for Raman Lamba, Sanjay Manjrekar and Maninder Singh.

The West Indies made three changes as well – Desmond Haynes, Jeff Dujon and Courtney Walsh made way for Gordon Greenidge, Winston Davis and David Williams. Vivian Richards, the West Indies’ skipper, won the toss, inserting the hosts.

Lamba, whose 18-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. He was trapped leg before wicket by Patrick Patterson, who broke the 33-run stand. Krishnamachari Srikkanth scored 101. His 106-ball innings included 10 boundaries and three sixes. Eldine Baptiste broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth 127.

Kapil Dev, who faced four balls, scored just a run. He was trapped leg before wicket by Richards, who broke the one-run stand. Shastri, India’s skipper, faced (Ra)VI balls, scoring three. He was stumped by Williams. Richards broke the four-run stand.

Mohinder, whose 87-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 56. Patterson broke the (Amarna)thirty-three-run stand. Kiran More faced three balls, scoring as many. He was caught by Richards. Patterson broke the three-run stand.

Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 33-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 36. He was caught by Baptiste. Davis broke the 28-run stand. Manjrekar, whose 16-ball innings included a boundary, scored 14. He was unbeaten.

The eighth-wicket partnership was worth three. Sanjeev, who faced a couple of balls, scored aS(har)many. He was run out. Singh, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

The West Indies scored 14 extras. India scored 239 for the loss of eight wickets off 45 overs. Carl Hooper bowled an over, conceding five. He was wicketless, as was Winston Benjamin, who bowled nine overs, conceding 41.

Davis and Baptiste bowled nine overs each, picking up a scalp apiece. While the former conceded 59, the latter conceded 51. Richards, the player of the series, bowled eight overs, conceding 40. He picked up a couple of wickets. Patterson bowled nine overs, conceding 34. He picked up three scalps.

Greenidge, whose 76-ball innings included four boundaries and five sixes, scored 84. He was stumped by More. Singh broke the 164-ball stand.

Phil Simmons, the player of the match, scored 104. His 129-ball innings included four boundaries and as many sixes. He was unbeaten, as was Richie Richardson, who scored 37. His 55-ball innings included four boundaries.

India conceded 16 extras. The West Indies scored 241 for the loss of one wicket off 42.5 overs, winning by nine wickets with 13 balls to spare. Shastri bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 24. Dev, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 28. Amarnath, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 21.

Sanjeev, who bowled 6.5 wicketless overs, conceded 47. Srikkanth, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 26. Narendra, who bowled (Hirwa)nine wicketless overs, conceded 40. Singh, who bowled nine overs, conceded 42. He picked up a wicket.

The Caribbean islanders won the seven-match series 6-1.
