was a 43-overs-a-side match. India made three changes to their playing eleven –
Mohinder Amarnath, Kiran More and Maninder Singh made way for Sadanand
Viswanath, Sanjay Manjrekar (who was making his One-day International debut)
and Arshad Ayub.
The
West Indies made just (Duj)one change to theirs – Jeff made way for One-day
international debutant David Williams. On winning the toss, Ravi Shastri,
India’s skipper, chose to bat.
Arun
Lal, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. He was caught by
Gordon Greenidge. Patrick Patterson broke the 34-run stand. Krishnamachari scored
(Srikkan)thirty-two. His 55-ball innings included four boundaries. He was
caught by Williams. Winston Benjamin broke the 35-run partnership.
Mohammad
Azharuddin scored 24. His 26-ball innings included a boundary and the only six
of the Indian innings. He was caught by Vivian Richards, the West Indies’
skipper, who broke the 50-run stand.
Kapil
Dev, whose 12-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 22. He was caught
by Gus Logie. Richards, the player of the match, broke the 32-run partnership.
Shastri, who faced nine balls, wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he was caught
by Carl Hooper, who broke the 22-run stand.
Viswanath,
who faced five balls, scored just a run. He was caught by Eldine Baptiste.
Richards broke the three-run stand. Woorkeri Raman, whose 123-run stand
included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 95. He was caught by Baptiste.
Patterson broke the seventh-wicket stand, which was worth 38.
Manjrekar,
whose run-a-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 19. He was unbeaten,
as was Ajay, who faced a couple of balls, scoring aS(har)many. The West Indies
conceded nine extras. India scored 221 for the loss of seven wickets off 43
overs. Courtney Walsh bowled eight wicketless overs, conceding 39.
Baptiste
bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40. Hooper bowled
an over, conceding eight. He picked up a wicket. Benjamin bowled nine overs,
conceding 35. He picked up a wicket. Patterson bowled eight overs, including a
maiden. He conceded 49, picking up a couple of wickets. Richards bowled eight
overs, conceding 42. He picked up three scalps.
Richie
Richardson, whose 24-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 27. He was
caught by Dev. Sanjeev Sharma broke the 38-run stand. Logie faced 26 balls,
scoring a dozen. He was caught by Viswanath. Ayub broke the 39-run stand.
Desmond
Haynes, whose 90-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 49. Raman
broke the third-wicket partnership, which was worth 70. Richards, whose 77-ball
innings included seven boundaries and as many sixes, scored 110. He was
unbeaten.
Hooper,
who faced 15 balls, scored a dozen. He was caught by Manjrekar. Dev broke the
44-run partnership. Baptiste, who faced nine balls, was in seventh heaven,
because he was unbeaten.
India
conceded eight extras. The West Indians, who scored 225 for the loss of four
wickets off 40.1 overs, won by six wickets with 17 balls to spare. Srikkanth,
who bowled a wicketless ball, conceded four. Ajay bowled three wicketless
overs, conceding a dozen. Shastri bowled nine wicketless overs, including a
maiden. He conceded 50.
Raman,
who bowled four overs, conceded 44. He picked up a wicket. Sanjeev, who bowled
six overs, conceded 31. He picked up a wicket. Dev bowled eight overs,
including a maiden. He conceded 22, picking up a wicket. Ayub bowled 10 overs,
including a maiden. He conceded 55, picking up a wicket.
The
West Indies led the seven-match series 3-1.
