The IndiaNZ (Gavask)aren’t shown love

It was St Valentine’s Day. New Zealand had yet another date with their frequent opponents, India, who made three changes to their playing eleven – Kirti Azad, Bharath Reddy and Dilip Doshi made way for Chetan Chauhan, Yograj Singh and Syed Kirmani. The Kiwis made just one change to theirs – John Parker made way for Jock Edwards.

Sunil Gavaskar, India’s skipper, inserted the hosts on winning the toss. John Wright, who faced 15 balls, scored 10. He was caught by Roger Binny. Karsan Ghavri broke the 24-run stand.

Bruce Edgar, the player of the match, scored 99. His 136-ball innings included six boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten. Edwards, who faced 51 balls, scored 36. His innings included three boundaries. He was caught by Chauhan. Ghavri broke the 88-run stand.

Howarth, the Kiwi skipper, scored 11 (Ge)off 10 balls. He was caught by Yograj. Sandeep Patil broke the 15-run stand. Jeremy Coney, who faced four balls, scored a Kapil. He was caught by Dev, who broke the five-run stand.

Ian Smith, who faced 21 balls, scored 10. Patil trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 24-run stand. Richard Hadlee, who faced 23 balls, scored 22. He was caught by Dilip Vengsarkar. Ghavri broke the 40-run stand.

Lance Cairns, who faced 14 balls, scored a dozen. He was unbeaten. Indian conceded 16 extras. New Zealand scored 218 for the loss of six wickets off 45 overs. Yograj bowled nine wicketless overs, conceding 57. Binny bowled six wicketless overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 26. 

Kapil bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40 and picked up a wicket. Patil bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 39 and picked up a couple of wickets. Ghavri bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40 and picked up three scalps.

Chauhan faced a dozen balls, scoring six. Hadlee broke the nine-run stand. The second-wicket stand was worth just one. Vengsarkar, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. He was run out.

Gavaskar faced 40 balls, scoring 14. He was caught by Smith. Martin Snedden broke the 21-run stand. Patil, who faced 12 balls, scored four. Ewen Chatfield broke the nine-run stand. Viswanath, who faced 40 balls, scored 14. Chatfield broke the one-run (Gundap)partnership.

Yashpal Sharma, who faced 38 balls, scored 17. He was caught by Edwards. Cairns broke the 45-run stand. The seventh-wicket stand was worth 36. Kapil, who faced 68 balls, scored 50. His innings included four boundaries and a six. He was run out.

The eighth-wicket pair didn’t open its account. Binny, who faced 30 balls, scored 12. He was caught by Edwards off the bowling of Cairns. Ghavri, who faced 15 balls, scored six. He was unbeaten.

Yograj, who faced three balls, scored a run. He was caught by Hadlee. Gary Troup broke the two-run stand. Kirmani, who faced 13 balls, scored 10. He was unbeaten. 

New Zealand conceded six extras. The Indians, who scored 140 for the loss of nine wickets off 45 overs, lost by 78 runs. Howarth bowled an over, conceded five. He was wicketless, as was Coney, who bowled three overs, conceding seven.

Hadlee bowled six overs, including three maidens. He conceded just six and picked up a wicket. Snedden bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 26 and picked up a wicket.

Troup bowled 10 overs, including three maidens. He conceded 21 and picked up a wicket. Cairns bowled seven overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 33 and picked up a couple of wickets. Chatfield bowled 10 overs, including two maidens. He conceded 36 and picked up a couple of scalps.

The Kiwis led the two-match series 1-0.
