It was a
34-overs-a-side match. India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Chetan
Chauhan and Sandeep Patil made way for Tirumalai Srinivasan and Yograj Singh.
Geoff Howarth, New Zealand’s skipper, chose to field on winning the toss.
Srinivasan,
who faced 23 balls, scored four. Jeremy Coney broke the 13-run stand. The
second-wicket pair didn’t open his account. Dilip Vengsarkar, who faced a
couple of balls, didn’t open his account. He was caught by John Parker off the
bowling of Coney.
The
third-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Sunil Gavaskar, India’s skipper,
faced 31 balls, scoring eight. Ewen Chatfield trapped him leg before wicket.
Patil, who
faced 22, scored eight. His innings included a boundary. He was caught by
Coney. Martin Snedden broke the 33-run stand. Yashpal Sharma, who faced 17
balls, scored five. Lance Cairns broke the 14-run stand.
The
fifth-wicket (Gundap)pair put on six. Viswanath faced 52 balls, scoring 33. His
innings included three boundaries. He was run out. The sixth-wicket stand was
worth 16. Syed Kirmani, who faced eight balls, wasn’t in seventh heaven. He was
run out.
Karsan
Ghavri, who faced 11 balls, scored six. He was caught by Howarth. Snedden broke
the 16-run stand. The ninth-wicket pair put just a Kapil. Dev, who faced 19
balls, scored 21. He was run out.
Roger Binny,
who bowled 14 balls, scored five. He was unbeaten, as was Dilip Doshi, who
faced five balls, scoring as many.
New Zealand
conceded 10 extras. India scored 112 for the loss of nine wickets off 34 overs.
Richard Hadlee bowled eight wicketless overs, including three maidens. He
conceded 15.
Cairns, who
bowled seven overs, conceded 39. He picked up a wicket, as did Chatfield, who
bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 14.
Coney bowled
six overs, including three maidens. He conceded 18. He picked up a couple of
scalps, as did Snedden, who bowled five overs. He conceded 16.
John Wright,
who faced 87 balls, scored 39. His innings included a boundary. He was
unbeaten, as was Bruce Edgar, the player of the match. He scored 65. His
89-ball innings included four boundaries.
India scored
nine extras. New Zealand scored 113 without losing a wicket off 29 overs,
(Ki)winning by 10 wickets with five overs to spare.
Patil bowled
two overs, conceding 10. Binny bowled four overs, conceding 23. Ghavri bowled
seven overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 15.
Kapil and
Doshi bowled eight overs apiece. While the latter conceded 29, the former
conceded 27.
It was
Srinivasan’s last ODI.
